Africa-Press – Angola. A total of 179 young people and adults from Ilha de Luanda received literacy certificates, in an initiative of the Fundação Arte e Cultura, with a view to eradicating illiteracy in that locality.
The deputy director of the Fundação Arte e Cultura said that the project, called “Alphabetizing the Island of Luanda”, is now entering its second phase.
Narciso Xavier explained that the project was initially conceived as a way of helping to reduce the number of children on the island of Luanda, of school age, outside the education system, due to lack of civil registration.
“As the reality was also visible among parents, we created the program. We notified the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, which promptly set up a civil registration and ticketing post at the Foundation and for three weeks 250 people then had the opportunity to do the civil registration”, he stressed.
During the registration process, he explained, a number of young people and adults were identified who could not read and write, to the point that many of the records were left without their signatures. “For this reason, the foundation decided to invest in a literacy project, with the approval of the National Directorate for Youth and Adult Education, which provided some rooms in two primary schools on the island”.
Today, he said, 200 people are enrolled in the literacy program and the foundation hopes to have a total of 500 people in this second phase. “In this way we will eradicate illiteracy in the community of Ilha de Luanda”, he highlighted.
