Lunda Norte takes Kakolondondo at the “Ngeya” festival

Africa-Press – Angola. The representatives of Lunda Norte province at the 1st East Regional Music and Dance Festival “Ngeya”, taking place from the 23rd to the 24th of this month, in Luena (Moxico), will, in addition to Ngoma (drumming), perform with the “Kakolondondo”, a traditional musical instrument in danger of extinction.

Made of wood and a head, the instrument used in the region’s classical music produces the sound of a guitar and piano.

According to the director of the provincial office for Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, José Pinto, he said that its exhibition aims at its dissemination, preservation and enhancement, preventing it from becoming an instinct in the range of instruments.

He made it known that it was widely used in folk music by renowned artists from the national market, such as Santos Catolica, Tony Nguxi, Gabriel Tchiema, Sassânida group Tchokwe Internacional, among others.

He added that the three groups (Cala Wesseque, Txaco Txa Utxoco and Maringa) will also perform the Mucanda (male circumcision) ritual, in addition to the akixi (clowns).

The event, which will bring together 126 artists, will serve to highlight the dimension of the culture of the east of the country, and the province of Moxico (host) will be represented with the groups Nejas, Ihalo, Marimba Kayowe, as well as Wino Wa Tembo and Nhamusso, while Lunda Sul will participate with Zango Tchissela, Mba Heza Mitingui and Kulimuka Tchiyanda.

In addition to music and dancing, the event will be marked by an exhibition of culinary products, a handicraft fair, a moment of reflection on the current state of culture in the region.

The “Ngeya” festival, an initiative of the Sociedade Mineira de Catoca, within the scope of the social responsibility programme, will take place at the Monumento à Paz tourist complex.

The project was launched on an experimental basis, in June 2022, in the province of Lunda Norte.
