Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan Lutuima Amaro was crowned champion of the Senior Rapid Chess Tournament in honor of Angolan Independence Day, a competition held at the facilities of the Angolan Community Association in Almada (ACAA), in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. The event featured eight chess players of each gender and was played in a round robin format, with a 5+2 game rhythm. In seven rounds, Lutuima gave his opponents no room to maneuver to better move their pieces on the board and scored six points out of a possible seven and received a trophy and a cash prize.

Joelson Ricardo, from Xadrez Nómico, and Jeovani Santos, from Pontinha de Lisboa, completed the podium. In the women’s category, Ariete de Almeida from São Tomé was the winner of the competition. The event was organized by the Macovi Angola School, Opupe and the Angolan Community Association of Almada.

Speaking via WhatsApp, the president of Escola Macovi, Marceliano Victor, said that the management will hold more tests of this kind this month to celebrate Independence Day.

“In addition to chess competitions, a futsal competition will be held on Saturday between Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP) as part of the November 11 festivities,” he announced.

The festivities commemorating November 11 have raised awareness among citizens not only in the country, but also in the diaspora, particularly in countries with an Angolan community, where sporting activities are usually more prominent.
