Africa-Press – Angola. Mali will replace Nigeria in the Women’s Basketball World Cup, following the Nigerian President’s decision to withdraw the country from all international competitions for two years, FIBA announced.
In a statement, the International Basketball Federation explains that the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) “cannot confirm its participation” in the World Cup, which will take place in Sydney, Australia, between 22 September and 1 October.
On May 12, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, approved the withdrawal of the NBFF teams from international competitions, due to the leadership crisis in the body.
The institutional crisis in the NBBF worsened last January, when the current president, Musa Kida, was re-elected, and Igoche Mark won another vote, held separately.
Mali, who lost 73-69 to Nigeria in the decisive game, will play in the World Cup as part of the group of France, Serbia, Japan, Canada and Australia.
