Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the National Maritime Agency, Anisabel Costa, requested greater commitment to work from those involved in the maritime and port sector, with a view to achieving positive results in the audit to be carried out by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in March 2025.

According to a press release, this Tuesday, the manager also warned port captains to reinforce supervision and compliance with laws, standards, regulations and directives applicable to this subsector of the Ministry of Transport.

The document states that Anisabel Costa was speaking during the inauguration ceremony of the new captains of the ports of Luanda, Lobito and Namibe.

On the occasion, he highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety, efficiency and preservation of the marine environment, as well as the people involved in the sector.

Port captains are maritime authority bodies responsible for supervising specific ports and their adjacent maritime areas.

Their responsibilities include compliance with maritime-port laws and regulations, issuing warnings to navigation, maintenance and operation of navigation aids, coordination of search and rescue operations in cases of emergency, inspection of vessels and, in some cases, supervision pilotage service at the port.

According to current legislation, port captaincies are part of the Local Services of the National Maritime Agency and are subject to their own regulatory rules, approved by the Ministry of Transport.

Angola has been an effective member of the IMO since 1977 and underwent a voluntary audit in 2014, in which “37 non-conformities” were identified.
