Massango price reduces in Cunene markets

Africa-Press – Angola. The price of massango, the most consumed cereal in the region, registered a reduction this month in the main markets in Cunene, costing 375 kwanzas per kilogram (kg), compared to the 550 sold last March.

The fact results, among other factors, from the change in the sale of the 150 kg bag, whose price dropped from 58 thousand to 48 thousand kwanzas.

The main informal markets are Oshomukuio, with more than three thousand vendors, and Germany, with more than 800, both in the city of Ondjiva.

In a round carried out, PRESS found that the same occurs with other food products, namely corn and massambala, previously sold at 520 and 450 kwanzas, respectively, and now both set at 400 kwanzas.

In brief statements, trader Emília Silombo said that at this price she sells an average of 10 bags of pasta per day, especially to customers in rural areas and others from the neighboring Republic of Namibia.

Consumer Lina Ndahafa said it was necessary for food prices to reduce even further, so families could have power and purchase.

For his part, the local person responsible for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Carlos Ndanyengondunge, said that the reduction in the price of massango is influenced by the volume of the product that, in recent days, enters the market from Huíla.

He mentioned that at Cunene level the harvest takes place between the months of June and July, although there are already families who, due to lack of reserves from the previous year, are already consuming the current production.

However, the provincial agriculture department plans to harvest, in the current campaign, 278 thousand tons 683 kilograms of various products, including massango, massambala, corn and legumes. Last year there were more than 500 thousand tons.

The current agricultural campaign involves 151 thousand 286 families, 520 tons of seeds and 100 tons of simple fertilizers (ammonium sulfate).
