Africa-Press – Angola. The Sociedade Mineira do Lulo announced, this Saturday, the discovery of a white diamond weighing 150 carats, of the “D-Color Type lla” type.
This is the 36th diamond with more than 100 carats recovered from the said mine located in the municipality of Capenda Camulemba, province of Lunda Norte.
According to a press release from Sociedade Mineira, the diamond was recovered in block 28 and is the fifth of more than 100 carats mined in the reserve.
It is the first recovered this year and goes straight to the showcase of the most important mined in Angola in recent years, although it does not feature in the top 5 of the largest, whose list continues to be headed by the 404-carat giant collected in 2016.
The Lulo mine has revealed, since the beginning of its exploration in 2010, a high potential of “quality and quantity”, having already achieved, in the first year of exploration, the highest value, per carat, in the whole world, in the order of 2,985 dollars (3,005 euros).
Lulo is also the mine where the largest diamond so far found in Angola was extracted, with 404.2 carats, sold in May 2016 for US$16 million and which came to yield US$34 million, after being polished and transformed in jewelry.
The consortium is made up of the Angolan companies Endiama EP (32%) and Rosas & Pétalas (28%), as well as the Australian Lucapa Diamond (40%).
