Minister highlights Angola Telecom's challenges in covering communication services

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Telecommunications Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário de Oliveira, said this Tuesday, in Luanda, that Angola Telecom has very important challenges in covering electronic communication services and increasing digital literacy in Angola.

The government official made these statements at the inauguration ceremony of the new Board of Directors of Angola Telecom, whose president is Adilson Miguel dos Santos.

He highlighted that the company plays a leading role in the modernization of the Angolan State and its institutions, serving as a base for providing services to industries and academia.

Regarding Angola Telecom’s responsibility, he emphasized that it is transversal to all subsectors of the national economy, as it involves providing support services to the economy, namely industry and academia, which are important pillars for the country’s development.

“A country without a robust academy is a country that does not develop and an academy that does not have robust telecommunications support is also an academy that cannot be at the service of the country,” he said.

He stated that a series of projects are being carried out that will leverage the institution’s services, with a view to expanding it throughout the national territory.

For the minister, expansion throughout the national territory is one of the purposes, as Angola Telecom’s infrastructures and services should reach all parts of the country, as well as the operators.

Mário de Oliveira praised the institution’s human capital, challenging it to place the institution in the context of national, regional and African companies.

In turn, the president of Angola Telecom, Adilson Miguel dos Santos, highlighted as a priority the improvement of the corporate indicator, restructuring of the company and the promotion of digital acceleration, with the rise of broadband, as well as improving the social conditions of the capital human.

Regarding the expansion of services throughout the national territory, Adilson dos Santos said that work could begin this year, lasting two years.

He said that the objective is to improve existing infrastructures and extend more than two thousand kilometers of fiber, with a broadband capacity twice as high as the current one.

“We must continue to be the technological arm of the country’s infrastructure and promote broadband, as this will provide greater access to information”, he said.

At a regional level, the president said there was already a market, citing the Democratic Republics of Congo, Namibia and Zambia.

In addition to Adilson Miguel dos Santos, directors António Mascarenhas, Yuri da Silva, Roque Dinis and Inocência dos Santos were sworn in.

Angola Telecom is a public telecommunications and multimedia company in Angola. It was founded in 1992, following the merger of the companies Nacional de Telecommunications (ENATEL) and Pública de Telecommunications (EPTEL).
