Africa-Press – Angola. Five thousand and 556 attempts to violate the border between Angola and Namibia were frustrated, in 2022, by the Border Guard Police (PGF) in Cunene province.

The information was provided this Wednesday by the director of the Institutional Communication and Press Office of the National Police in Cunene, superintendent Nicolau Tuvekalela, noting that compared to 2021, there was an increase of 3,259 attempts to violate the border.

The attempts took place at border markers 12, 16, 19, 20, 21 and 22, under the control of the sub-units of Santa Clara, Okatale, Calueque and Namacunde.

He reported that border violations were typified by 5,504 people on foot, 35 with motorcycles and 17 with vehicles, which resulted in the interpellation of 43,545 citizens, of which 43,501 were nationals and 44 were foreigners.

Of the foreigners there are 35 Namibians, two Pakistanis, two Kenyans and the rest of Somali, Gambian, Chinese, South African and Democratic Congolese nationality.

As part of the fight against tax evasion, he referred that 17 vehicles, 52 motorcycles, an agricultural tractor, three pistol-type firearms and a shotgun were seized, as well as 100 precious stones (tourmaline), three kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of supplement for cocaine composition, 80 kilograms of cannabis sativa (liamba) and 206 mobile phones.

For fuel smuggling, it was possible to seize 18 thousand and 805 liters of gasoline and five thousand 70 liters of diesel destined for Namibia, for commercial purposes.

The Angolan province of Cunene shares a 460 kilometer border with Namibia, 340 on land and 120 on rivers.
