The information was provided this Tuesday to press by the coordinator of the Emergency Response project in Southwest Angola (SWAER), Armindo Sambambi, stressing that the action aims to minimize the high rate of malnutrition in rural communities.
According to the person responsible for those assisted, there are 2,910 children and 268 pregnant and lactating women in the municipalities of Ombadja, Cahama and Curoca.
He said that the project, which has been running since May 2022, is based on the allocation of daily meals on five days of the week, as part of a response to the effects of the drought that is plaguing the southern region of the country.
Armindo Sambambi made it known that the project allowed the creation of 15 Supplementary Food Centers (formerly community kitchens), where beneficiaries receive nutritious and diversified porridge based on soy, corn flour, oil and sugar (Primix).
He said that the project, which runs until May 2023, currently assists the rural communities of Ombwa, Tchikolo, Onamabunde, Tchipa, Chitado, Kavalawa, Otchinjau, Kanimei, Tchilau, Tchikua Chica, Mucupe, Tyandi, Simione Mukune and Calueque .
He informed that for this year the intention is to increase from 15 to 18 centres, with the creation of three more in Ombadja, in order to increase the scope of assisted people.
Furthermore, he highlighted the creation of satellite kitchens, which will meet the children, in order to shorten the distance they are subjected to to reach the centre.
Without specifying the budget, Armindo Sambambi said that the project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, within the framework of the Emergency Response in Southwest Angola (SWAER) project.
