Africa-Press – Angola. The nationalist Chico Adão defended today, Friday, in Luanda, the holding of regular meetings between the different generations to address the real causes that culminated in the 4th of February 1961, the date of the beginning of the Armed Struggle for the Liberation of Angola.

In a meeting with second cycle students and members of civil society, Chico Adão said that events of this kind promote intergenerational dialogue and make it possible to elucidate the younger ones about the experience of the older ones and reasons for giving their lives in favor of freedom.

The nationalist said that “due to the mistreatment by the Portuguese colonialists there was a need to do something to put an end to oppressive practices”.

Speaking about the 62nd anniversary of that event, he explained that, in that period, “Africans” could only study in Evangelical, Methodist and Baptist churches, and to attend educational institutions for Portuguese people they had to be children of “assimilated” blacks.

“(….) Only the children of assimilated or country people with Identity Cards could enroll in white schools. And this father, in order to receive the BI (Portuguese citizenship certificate), needed to prove that he lived according to the habits and customs of white people”, he recalled.

For this purpose, underlined the Angolan nationalist, that person had to have, first, a valid certificate, issued exclusively by the Catholic Church through baptism, since the highest bodies said that whoever receives Catholic baptism is because he has knowledge.

At the end of the meeting, held at School 1134, in the Maianga Urban District, the students considered the initiative valuable and called for its continuity, as it helps to increase knowledge, general culture and preserve the country’s history.

As for the 4th of February itself, student João Azevedo stated that it is a date of great significance, which is why it is necessary to look at national heroes with respect. “We believe that today we have the Angola of all of us, thanks to the commitment of that generation”, he stressed.

Student Maria Augusta said that the meeting was very useful and allowed a better understanding of the sacrifice and bravery of these sons of the country, demonstrated in 1961, for the achievement of the country’s independence, 14 years later, this on November 11, 1975.

On the 4th of February, Angolans celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the beginning of the armed struggle that culminated in the proclamation of Angola’s independence.

For Angolans this date is very important and for reflection, as it symbolizes a historical moment of great relevance for the country, as it was on February 4, 1961 that a group of fearless Angolans rose up against the colonialist regime.

They began with the attacks against the prisons of São Paulo, in Luanda, where the nationalist prisoners were held, and together they continued in the fight against Portuguese colonial oppression.
