Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s ruling MPLA party emphasized on Monday (22), in Luanda, that the militancy of Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos “Nandó”, who passed away on the 18th of the current month, began at a time when the ideal of independence demanded courage and commitment.
In a message read by Pedro Neto, coordinator of the MPLA’s Audit and Discipline Commission, at the wake of the former Vice-President of the Republic, which took place at the venue o the Presidential Protocol Complex, the party also acknowledges that the political life of the deceased profoundly marked the contemporary history of Angola and the party.
MPLA writes that he also served as Prime Minister, actively participated in the construction of the Angolan state after Nov 11, 1975, and in the consolidation of the political organization, the defense of national unity, and the peace process that culminated in the Bicesse Agreenment in 1991.
According to Pedro Neto, as a leader, Nandó stood out for his measured stance during sensitive moments in party life, for the training of political and military cadres, and for strengthening the party from the grassroots, always maintaining direct contact with the people.
“His legacy remains alive in the structures he strengthened and in the ethical example he left”, Pedro Neto read.
The rulling party also highlights the sensitivity to the arts, music, sports, and well-chosen words of the former head of the National Assembly (Angolan parliament).
The messge also notes that from a personal point of view, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos “Nandó” maintained consistency between his public and private life, guided by simplicity, discretion, and fidelity to the values he defended.
In the message, the party reaffirms its commitment to Nandó’s principles and recalls that his contribution to peace, the reconstruction of the country, and the affirmation of the MPLA in Angolan society will remain in the nation’s memory.
The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, and party leaders, family and friends, who expressed condolences to the bereaved family, highlighting the deceased’s trajectory of dedication, balance and loyalty to the national cause.
Also paying tribute to the deceased were the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança Costa, the National Assembly Speaker, Adão de Almeida, distinguished representatives of the sovereign bodies, members of the defense and security bodies, as well as the diplomatic corps accredited in Angola, among other entities.
