Africa-Press – Angola. The national senior men’s basketball team, without “stars”, seeks qualification for the World Cup in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10, 2023.
The walk begins this Friday in the Angolan capital, against a similar team from Uganda, which it won by 84-62, in August last year, for the third window of the referred qualification.
On the second round scheduled for Saturday, the national “five” will face the counterpart from Cape Verde, in a Lusophone “duel”, and will end up facing Nigeria on Sunday.
The achievement of the much-desired qualification goes through two victories in the three scheduled games.
Coach Pep Clarós, the Spaniard who guides the national team, will have many “new faces”, many of whom will play for the first time at Kilamba’s Multiusos pavilion, in Luanda.
Without the most regulars in the race, namely Leonel Paulo, John Pedro, Aboubakar Gakou, Felizardo Ambrósio, Islando Manuel, the group consisting of João Fernandes, Teotónio Dó, Dimitri Makonda, Childe Dundão and Gerson Lukeny, the latter in the team captain’s uniform and so many others assume responsibility for reaching the Worlds in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
In nine games played, the national team won seven and lost two.
Group E: (Disputed in Angola)
Cote d’Voire leads with 14 points, Angola (12), Cape Verde (11), Nigeria (10), Guinea (8) and Uganda (8).
Group F: (Disputed in Egypt)
South Sudan leads with 17 points, followed by Egypt (16), Senegal (15), Tunisia (14), DRC (13) and Cameroon with 11.
The first two teams in each group and the best third-placed team qualify for the World Championship.
