Africa-Press – Angola. The municipal administrators of the province of Huambo showed themselves, this Tuesday, confident in the effectiveness of the Proposal for the Law of the Political-Administrative Division (DPA) in boosting the socio-economic development of the country.

Speaking this Tuesday, some municipal managers consider it to be an assertive measure to respond to the challenges of the process of promoting the socio-economic progress of the country.

The document, which is currently open for public consultation, foresees raising, from 2024, the current 417 organic communes and districts of Angola, to the category of municipality.

With this measure, the country will have 581 municipalities, against the current 164.

For the province of Huambo, it is expected to increase, from 11 to 37 municipalities, with the elevation to this category of the other 26 organic communes.

In the opinion of the administrator of Cachiungo, Paulo Moma Kundomboca, the current model of communes delays socio-economic development, due to total dependence on municipal administrations.

Still in terms of insufficiencies, he pointed out the fact that it does not provide for their own budgets for communal administrations and specific competences for their administrators, a situation that, in his view, has conditioned the carrying out of local development actions.

Accordingly, he referred that the pretension of elevating the communes to the category of municipalities will allow the creation of the bases to leverage the development of these localities, in terms of budgets and infrastructures for the functioning of the institutions of the State.

According to the administrator of Huambo, Azevedo Cambiambia, in addition to granting greater administrative autonomy to the communes, the measure will facilitate the resolution, in a quick and timely manner, of the problems of the population, by allowing the approximation of public institutions to the citizens of rural areas .

In turn, the administrator of Longongo, Wilne Ekuikui, understands that the measure consolidates the principle of administrative decentralization in the country and guarantees greater participation of citizens in public policies.

In the province of Huambo, located in the Central Plateau of Angola, live more than two million 700 thousand citizens, distributed in 11 municipalities and 37 communes, in a territorial extension of 35 thousand 771 square kilometres.
