The Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System in Africa (AMHEWAS) was designed by the African Union to respond to the complex disaster risk challenges that have been increasing and are unfortunately expected to increase further in frequency and magnitude. . “In 2015, States, under the supervision of the United Nations, adopted the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. The “Sendai Framework” aims to substantially increase the access and availability of early warning systems of various risks for people by 2030″, stressed the diplomat.
The AMHEWAS pilot phase resulted in the establishment of three continental situation rooms, one at AU Headquarters, Addis Ababa, one in Nairobi, the Disaster Operations Room (IGAD), and the Climate Consultancy Room, (ACMAD), in Niamey (Niger).
