Africa-Press – Angola. The Kalyalya percussion instrument earned, on Saturday night, in Luena, references, at the 1st East Regional Festival of Music and Dance called Ngeya.
After the appreciation, in 2022, of the Cinguvu musical instrument, the organization of Ngeya highlighted the importance of Kalyalya as a way of valuing, preserving and disseminating the habits and customs of the eastern region of the country.
It is an instrument on the verge of extinction, which, like so many others, needs to be displayed constantly, in an action that must involve the government, private institutions, specialists, students, among other social actors.
Kalyalya is made from wood and a gourd, to be used in classical music from the eastern region, which includes the provinces of Moxico, Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte.
The instrument produces the sound of a guitar and piano.
Dissemination, preservation and appreciation will prevent the Kalyalya, Kakolondondo or Kissange, in other regions of the country, from disappearing from the range of musical instruments in the country.
Rodrigues Maia, 77 years old, said he is one of the few that still manufactures the musical instrument, as young people “ignore” the passage of testimony in the manufacture of the Kalyalya.
He described the sound of the instrument, which is known in other parts of the world, as soothing to the soul and comforting for those who use or listen to it.
The festival, sponsored by Sociedade Mineira de Catoca, aims to rescue intercultural dialogue, the meeting of generations and the construction of legacies to promote the multiculturalism of these three provinces of Angola.
The non-competitive event had the participation of 11 folk groups, in addition to 44 modern music artists who performed on the first day of the festival.
The 11 groups that participated directly in the Ngeya festival, a term from the Cokwe people that in Portuguese means euphoria or celebration, received one million Kwanzas each.
