Ombudsman wants more intervention from Parliament

Africa-Press – Angola. The ombudsman, Florbela Rocha Araújo, defended this Wednesday, in Luanda, the need to permanently strengthen institutional cooperation with the National Assembly, in order to address the concerns of citizens related to the defense of rights, freedoms and guarantees fundamental.

Florbela Araújo held a working meeting with the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, where she also defended the need for advocacy with the competent bodies, particularly the Executive, to improve the functioning conditions of the institution that defends the citizen, at central level and location.

According to the ombudsman, the extension of the provincial services of the Ombudsman’s Office is one of the main objectives of its mandate.

Speaking to the press, Florbela Araújo referred that the Ombudsman’s lack of facilities, the expansion of the staff and the occasional amendment of the Ombudsman’s Law and the Organic Law of the Statute of the Ombudsman are the main concerns related to with the sector.

During the meeting, the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, accepted the questions presented and guaranteed that she will submit them to Organs competent bodies.

He instructed the Ombudsman to collaborate with the 10th commission of the Angolan parliament, dedicated to human rights, petitions, complaints and suggestions from citizens, within the framework of strengthening institutional cooperation.

This is the first working meeting between the Ombudsman and the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira.

The Ombudsman and the Deputy Ombudsman are elected by the National Assembly, for a renewable five-year term. Due to legal imperative, the institution presents an annual report on the Ombudsman’s activities.
