Ombudsman's Office records decrease in complaints in the first quarter

Africa-Press – Angola. A total of 123 various complaints were registered by the Ombudsman’s Office, in the first quarter of 2024, in Namibe, compared to 159 in the same period of the previous year, reported in Moçâmedes, the head of provincial services, Eduardo Severino.

The person responsible clarified that of the 123 registered cases, 98 are male, 22 female, one (1) collective and two (2) anonymous.

He made it known that, from the point of view of the nature of the issues, it was found that the most recurrent ones were related to the lack of a certificate of sentence and settlement of sentence, expired sentence, request for legal assistance, non-payment of retirement benefits and survival subsidies, procedural slowness and the lack of responses to citizens’ requests addressed to the different institutions that provide public services.

The person in charge stated that the Ombudsman’s provincial services aim to bring services closer to the population through visits, lectures, observations in public institutions and public hearings.

He said that although most of the cases are from the municipality of Moçâmedes, the institution has carried out work in other districts, as a way of awakening legal culture within the communities.

He said that, every day, between 5 and 10 complaints are received, with emphasis on procedural delays, breach of contract, request for a sentence certificate and sentence extension.

“What worries most is the slowness of the process, the citizen has the right to be informed”, he said.

He highlighted the existence of an environment of cooperation between the bodies that administer justice in the province and municipal administrations, which has allowed the resolution of several processes.

He made it known that, within the framework of the Ombudsman’s week, at provincial level there will be continuity in public hearings at the municipal market, lectures at the seaside resort and also visits to a hospital unit and police station.
