Africa-Press – Angola. Retired lieutenant general António Domingos Valeriano, one of the commanders of the famous Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, which culminated in the defeat of the apartheid regime in South Africa, died on Monday in Luanda, a victim of illness.

In a condolence message sent yesterday, the Minister of National Defense, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Nation said that it was “with the deepest consternation” that he learned of the physical death of Lieutenant General António Domingos Valeriano.

João Ernesto dos Santos “Liberdade” considers that the deceased was a political and military professional who very early on interpreted the signs of the time regarding the need for armed defense of the Fatherland, having voluntarily integrated the FAPLA – the first National Army, with notable performance in the process of affirmation of the Angolan State, particularly with its active participation in the famous Battle of Cuíto Cuanavale.

“Along with other fearless young commanders, they led the victorious effort against the forces of the South African racial segregation regime (Apartheid), indelibly inscribed in the History of Angola, as an unavoidable milestone in the preservation of National Independence, territorial integrity, peace, unity and national reconciliation, the Democratic Rule of Law and the liberation of Southern Africa”, reads the message.

Minister Liberdade also recalls that throughout his career, António Domingos Valeriano held various positions in the hierarchy of FAPLA and the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), including 2nd commander of the 10th Military Region, 2nd commander of the 6th Military Region, commander of the 5th Infantry Division in the Southern Military Region and, finally, commander of the 4th Infantry Division in the Central Military Region, which he served until his retirement.

“In this hour of pain and mourning in which we join, in the name of the Ministry of National Defense, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland, and in my own, I bow to the memory of the deceased and present to the bereaved family, the expression of our feelings Condolences for the unfortunate event. May his soul rest in peace”, concludes the message.
