Pan-African Parliament reappoints Zimbabwean deputy to presidency

Africa-Press – Angola. Representative Fortune Zephaniah Charumbira, from Zimbabwe, was re-elected this Monday (25), in Gauteng (South Africa), as president of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), by 127 votes in favour, 37 against and 2 abstentions, in a voting universe of 166 deputies present.

According to a note, the first and fourth vice-presidents, Massouda Mohamed Laghdaf (Mauritania) and Djidda Mahamat (Tchad), respectively, were also elected.

This extraordinary session of the legislative body of the African Union (AU) thus ends a turbulent period in its functioning, due to vacancies in its Presidency Table.

Fortune Charumbira has been president of the PAP since 2022 and had to cease his mandate due to the general elections that took place in his country (Zimbabwe), in August 2023, which also happened in Mauritania.

After some attempts to subvert the logical and legal procedures, by some member countries or isolated deputies, the Executive Council of the African Union decided, in February, to hold these partial elections, based on the principle of continuity of mandates by the regions concerning.

These, in turn, also chose to maintain the countries whose citizens performed their respective functions, with a single exception being in Central Africa, where Chad replaced Gabon, due to the latest unconstitutional events in that country.

Angola is represented by a parliamentary delegation led by deputy Manuel Augusto, President of the National Monitoring Group for the PAP and which also includes deputies Adalberto da Costa Júnior, Arlete Borges, Maria Escovalo and Abel Chivukuvuku.

The Pan-African Parliament has its headquarters in Midrand (Gauteng), South Africa, and began its activity in 2004, with the Angolan deputy França Van-dúnem being its first 1st Vice-President.
