Africa-Press – Angola. The National Assembly (AN) will hear, Friday, for about an hour, the candidate nominated by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to be governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), Manuel António Tiago Dias.
The current interim governor of the Central Bank, Manuel António Tiago Dias, is expected to replace José de Lima Massano, who recently resigned from office, and is now serving as Minister of State for Economic Coordination.
“In addition to conferring democratic legitimacy on the appointment of the Governor of the National Bank, the act of hearing allows assessing the suitability, management capacity, technical competence and recognized experience in economics, law, accounting, banking, finance and management of the candidate”, says a AN announcement.
In the parliamentary session, deputies will be able to question the candidate about “the nature, functions, constitutional and legal competences attributed to the National Bank, as well as about the legally required impediments and ineligibility for the exercise of the function”.
Manuel António Tiago Dias holds a Master’s Degree in Economic Sciences from the University of Bordeaux, in France. He joined the BNA in 1997, where he held various roles until his appointment in 2016 to deputy governor, a role he held until 2023, before being appointed to the recent post of interim governor of the central bank of Angola.
