Parliament Specialty Committee Approves Military Discipline Code

Africa-Press – Angola. Luanda – The draft law for the approval of the new Military Discipline Code received, on Friday (06) in Luanda, a validation from MPs in the specialty committee.

The legislative initiative, which falls within the scope of the process of revising the legislation of the defense sector, essentially aims to provide the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) with a disciplinary regime that guarantees its regular functioning, cohesion and readiness, with a view to the successful fulfillment of the missions constitutionally assigned to the FAA.

The meeting was marked by debates to shape the wording of the texts in chapters V, VI and VII, which received the approval of the legislators.

The approval of the Military Discipline Code stems from the need to harmonize the legal regime of military discipline with the Constitution, which enshrines a set of fundamental rights, freedoms, and guarantees that must apply to the military disciplinary process, albeit in a restricted manner, due to the specificities of the military.

The review aims to harmonize the legislation with the country’s socio-political, economic, and military reality, prioritizing respect and observance of the Constitution, laws and regulations, as well as international conventions to which Angola is a party off.

Military personnel in reserve and retired status are subject to the special duties foreseen in the Draft Law, initiated by the Executive.

After passing through the scrutiny of MPs, in the specialty committee, the next session will formalize the approval of the Joint Opinion Report for final overall approval.
