Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s participation in the African Chess Championship at training levels, from the 15th to the 24th of this month, in the province of Gauteng (South Africa), should reflect the greatness of the Angolan people and the knowledge assimilated during the preparation.

The statement was made by the Secretary of State for Youth, Boaventura Chitapa, when this Friday, in Luanda, he handed over the National Flag to the teams, of both sexes, in the categories of Under-8, 9, 12, 14, 16 and 18.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, he said that young chess players will be at the African showcase of the sport with the duty of raising the Angolan flag at the highest level.

In turn, the vice-president of the Angolan Chess Federation, António Assis, considered it a mission of high responsibility due to the country’s history in African competitions, mainly at youth levels.

He explained that the delegation includes only eight athletes due to financial limitations, because in each category the organization allows five players to register.

Despite the difficulties, the sports director assured that the main objective is to reach the podium, in a race where Angola has tradition.

The National Team is captained by Gemima Paulo, from the Ditrov school, in Viana

In the 2022 edition, held in Zambia, the National Team won three medals, one gold, an equal number of silver and bronze.

Here is the list of Angolan chess players scheduled for “Operation Gauteng”:
