Africa-Press – Angola. Former Portuguese national football team coach Pedro Gonçalves will continue working in Africa, now with the Young Africans of Tanzania, a team that qualified for the group stage of the Champions League.
Having been dismissed from the Palancas Negras on September 18th, reportedly due to poor results, Luso replaces Frenchman Romain Folz, who was fired after a string of equally poor results.
On his official website, Pedro Gonçalves expressed pride in beginning a new challenge with the Young Africans Sports Club, a club he considers to be historically great and have a winning culture.
“We arrive with ambition, energy, and a desire to help the team succeed, while always remaining true to a positive style,” he emphasized.
The Young Africans defeated Silver Strikers of Malawi in the last round, losing 0-1 in the first leg and winning 2-0 in the second.Previously, the Tanzanian team eliminated Wiliete de Benguela (Angola) with victories of 3-0 and 2-0, respectively.
The draw for the competition, in which Angola will be represented by Petro de Luanda, will take place on November 3rd in the South African city of Johannesburg.
Pedro Gonçalves, 49, worked in the youth teams of Sporting de Portugal, later transferring to Angola to join the 1.o de Agosto Academy.
In 2019, he signed with the Angolan Football Federation to coach the U-17 team, but it was with honors that he made history, achieving unprecedented achievements in the history of national football.
For example, under him, Angola was considered the winningest team in the 2024-25 season, qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2023-24 African Cup of Nations, held in Côte d’Ivoire, and returned Angola to this year’s African Cup of Nations, held undefeated and early.
Among other achievements while serving Angola, the coach also won two Cosafa Cups in 2024 and 2025.
