Africa-Press – Angola. The photovoltaic solar plants of Biópio, Baía Farta (Benguela) and Saurimo (Lunda-Sul) provide 370 megawatts (MW) of energy for the national electrical system, the Secretary of State assured this Thursday in Luanda for Energy, Arlindo Carlos.
The director, who was speaking at a press conference, also announced the inauguration, in June 2025, of the Cuito (Bié) and Bailundo (Huambo) solar plants, with capacities of 14,652 MW and 7,992 MW, respectively.
On the occasion, the Secretary of State said that, currently, the Biópio plant, in operation since 2022, is producing at its maximum power capacity valued at 188 thousand 877.60 MW.
On the other hand, the Baía Farta solar park, in operation since July 2022, provides 96 thousand 703.20 megawatts, while the Saurimo photovoltaic solar plant, which came into operation in March this year, produces 26 thousand 906.40 MW.
According to Arlindo Carlos, the entry into operation of the three plants reduced by 860 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually, which impact climate change.
He added that, with the completion of the first package of seven plants and 48 mini grids, there will be a global reduction of around 1.3 million tons of CO2 per year.
With this, he considered there to be a focus on developing new generation capacity based on hydro or solar, while maintaining attention to the operation and maintenance of thermal plants currently in operation.
He also highlighted the construction of the Caculo-Cabaça hydroelectric plant, with an installed capacity of 2.2 gigawatts, and the Laúca Solar Plant, with a capacity of 400 MW.
Secretary of State Carlos reiterated that the Angolan Government maintains its objective of developing the binomial solar and water energy.
The press conference, held at the Aníbal de Melo Press Center (CIAM), is part of the National Electricity System Expansion and Modernization Program, promoted by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information and Communication Technologies.
