Africa-Press – Angola. The population of the province of Moxico recorded an increase, rising to one million, 24 thousand and 573 inhabitants this year (2024), against the 761 thousand 457 projected by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in 2014, during the Census Populational.

According to the INE document on the projection of the population of Moxico to which ANGOP had access, this increase in the population of the largest province in Angola (occupies 16 percent of the national territory), represents an increase of 263 thousand 116 people compared to the first projection of the census carried out almost 10 years ago.

The INE already predicted, through the Multiple and Health Indicators Survey (IIMS) 2015/2016, the addition of inhabitants of this province, by projecting a fertility rate set at 7.0, constituting the tenth highest in the country, at the high.

For Moxico, INE also predicted, in 2016, a low rate of contraceptive prevention, estimated at four percent, with an equal number of married women using modern contraceptive methods and 1% using a traditional method.

According to the document, the number of women will continue to be higher, rising from 390,615 in 2014 to 522,54 this year, equivalent to 51 percent compared to men.

According to the projection, the 15 to 64 year old group represents the largest number of inhabitants in the province, with 52 percent, followed by the 0 to 14 year old group with 45%.

According to area of ​​residence, 57 percent of the province’s population lives in urban areas.

The city of Luena (capital) concentrates the largest number of the province’s population, with 47 percent, rising from the 358 thousand 774 predicted in 2014, to 482 thousand 749 inhabitants, followed by Alto Zambeze and Luau, with more than 149 and 120 thousand residents, respectively.

In the opposite direction, the municipalities of Luchazes and Luacano continue to be the least populated in the province, with 19 thousand 523 and 28 thousand and 32 inhabitants, respectively.

According to a study on the Multidimensional Poverty Index by Municipality (IPM-M) carried out in 2019 by INE, these last two municipalities, followed by Léua and Cameia, have the highest poverty rate.

With nine municipalities, the province of Moxico has an area of ​​223,023 km2 (the largest in the country), it is limited to the north by the province of Lunda-Sul, to the east by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia, to the south by Cuando-Cubango and, to the west through the province of Bié.

After 2014, the next population and housing census may be carried out this year, with this census activity taking place every ten years.

The population census is a vast process that aims to update information on the number of inhabitants in the country, where and how they live, with a view to better planning and distribution of resources and services to the population.
