Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, this Thursday urged greater attention to school sports, as it is the hotbed of federated sport.

The Head of State was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão Pinto de Andrade, appointed on Wednesday to replace Palmira Barbosa.

João Lourenço advised better preparation for Angolan athletes, anticipating good results in upcoming challenges, such as the next African Nations Championship (CAN).

Likewise, President João Lourenço recommended attention to the maintenance and management of sports infrastructures built in the country.

João Lourenço also considered it necessary for the country to recover its splendor in sports such as basketball, and maintain its results in handball, particularly women’s, without neglecting other sports.

In his speech, he mentioned that culture and sport are important for the life of any nation.

Infrastructure situation

Speaking to the press, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, proposes to carry out a real survey of the situation of sports infrastructures in the country.

He spoke of the need to work on an “infrastructure management profile”, establishing partnerships in some cases, given the large volume and resources required for its maintenance.

He valued the call for the massification of school sports, given the positive results achieved, such as “Os caçulinhas da ball” (football tournament), as well as establishing policies to relaunch school sports.

Rui Falcão also referred to the need to require federations to provide timely preparation programs.

Appointed Wednesday by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, Rui Falcão was Secretary for Information of the MPLA Political Bureau and replaces Palmira Barbosa in the position.

Rui Falcão has already held the positions of deputy to the National Assembly, governor of the provinces of Benguela and Namibe, as well as national director of the Department of the State Secretariat for Physical Education and Sports, among others.

In the period from 1991 to 1992, the department was led by Osvaldo de Jesus Serra Van-Dúnem, followed by Justino Fernandes (1992-1995), Marcos Barrica (1999-2008), Gonçalves Muandumba (2008-2016), Ana Paula do Sacramento Neto (2017-2022), Palmira Barbosa (2022-2024) and Rui Falcão (2024…).
