Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, expressed, this Friday, dismay at the death of around 70 people, in recent days, in the provinces of Huíla and Huambo, due to direct lightning strikes.
In a note published on the Presidency’s Facebook page, the Angolan Head of State also expresses solidarity with those injured as a result of those natural phenomena.
The statesman adds that, given the increasing incidence of these events related to the rainy season, the competent authorities – with the Provincial Governments at the forefront – were instructed to do everything to protect the lives of the populations, triggering various initiatives such as directly monitoring the situation, providing all useful support to those affected and reinforcing awareness-raising actions to avoid exposure to rays.
On Thursday, 23, 11 people died and three were injured, as a result of an atmospheric discharge that hit a shelter installed in a mine, in the commune of Cusse, municipality of Caconda, 236 kilometers north of Lubango (Huíla).
This rainy season, firefighters have already recorded 15 deaths from lightning strikes in Huíla, 11 in the municipality of Caconda and four in Caluquembe.
In the province of Huambo, in the last nine days, 13 people died after being hit by electric lightning, with emphasis on the six dead and 14 injured in the informal market in the municipal town of Bailundo.
