Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, traveled this Sunday to the city of Kigali (Rwanda), where he witnessed the inauguration of President Paul Kagame, re-elected in July this year for a five-year term.

At 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, João Lourenço received farewell greetings from the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, and other individuals.

Paul Kagame became President of Rwanda in 2000, elected by Parliament, after the resignation of the then Head of State, Pasteur Bizimungu, which was followed by four other elections by universal suffrage.

The current leader is one of the dominant figures in Rwanda since he overthrew, in July 1994, with the forces of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (FPR), the Hutu government.

In the legislative elections, which took place simultaneously, the hegemony of the presidential party (FPR) was also confirmed, which collected 68.83% of the votes.

This East African nation has been independent since July 1, 1962 and has an area of 26,340 square kilometers, home to around 13.6 million people, whose economy is mainly based on tourism, mining and agriculture.

Rwanda has a mountainous, landlocked territory, bordering Burundi (South), Democratic Republic of Congo (West), Uganda (North) and Tanzania (East).

As a result of the mediation efforts of the Angolan President, in his capacity as Peace Champion of the African Union (AU), this country signed, on 30 June this year, a ceasefire agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) , which affects the eastern Congolese region.
