Africa-Press – Angola. The Chairperson of African Union (AU) and Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, is in Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea, to guide, on Sunday, the VII biannual summit of the continental organization.
Upon his arrival, João Lourenço was received at Malabo International Airport by the Equatorial Guinean Prime Minister, Manuel Osa Nsue Nsua.
Sunday’s summit, a coordination meeting with the regional economic communities (RECs) and regional mechanisms (RMs), was preceded by the 47th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council, held from 10 to 11 July under the chairmanship of the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.
According to the meeting programme, President João Lourenço will speak at the beginning and end of the event during which several reports will be presented such as the “State of Continental Integration”, by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati.
The presentation of the document “State of Regional Integration by the RECs and RM” will be in charge of the president of the Presidential Council of the State of Libya and acting president of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), Mohamed al-Menfi.
Other reports will be presented by Mahamat Itno Déby, President of the Republic of Chad and acting of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CENSAD), and Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of Djibouti and acting of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Communications are also expected from Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and acting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as well as William Samoei Ruto, Kenyan head of state and acting president of the East African Community (EAC).
The President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnagagwa, will speak on behalf of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and his Burundian counterpart, Évariste Ndayishimiye, for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
Host Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and acting member of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) will also speak on the matter.
On Regional Mechanisms, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of Egypt and the Regional Capacity of North Africa (NARC), as well as Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the East African Standby Force (EASF), will speak.
The Egyptian statesman will also present the report “The Role of AUDA-NEPAD in Achieving Continental and Regional Integration”, in his capacity as Chairman of the Steering Committee of Heads of State and Government (HSGOC) and the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD).
“The State of Implementation of the AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area)” is another report, and will be presented by Issoufou Mahamadou, Champion of the AfCFTA and former President of the Republic of Niger, while Elias M. Magosi, Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will deal with “Ongoing geopolitical developments and implications for Africa”.
AUC Vice President Selma Malika Haddad will address the “Progress of the African Union Commission on the Implementation of the Theme of the Year 2025”, while AUC Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye will address the “AU/REC Policy Coordination and Harmonization: I-RECKE: Lessons on Structural Conflict Prevention at Regional and Continental Levels”.
The latest report will be presented by Professor Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo, head of the Reform Unit, and is entitled “Division of Labour”.
The 6th AU/Regional Economic Communities (REC)/Regional Mechanisms (RM) Biannual Coordination Summit took place in Accra (Ghana) in 2024, the 5th in Nairobi (Kenya) in 2023, the 4th in Lusaka (Zambia) in 2022, the 3rd in N’Djamena (Chad) in 2021, the 2nd was virtual, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 1st in Niamey, Niger, in 2019.
