Africa-Press – Angola. President João Lourenço returned to Luanda on Tuesday (20), after participating in the 78th Annual Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO), in Geneva (Switzerland).

Upon arrival at the 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, João Lourenço was received by the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, and several members of the Executive.

During his speech in Geneva, President João Lourenço announced Angola’s USD 8 million contribution to the WHO, to continue guaranteeing the organization’s operations, and highlighted the advances made by the country in the last eight (8) years in the field of health.

On the other hand, as the African Union Chair, he called on WHO member states to strengthen their actions, in a gesture of global support, so that the organization can continue to protect the health of its people.

He also called on the United Nations (UN) to support a Joint AU-UN Health and Peace Initiative to protect health infrastructure and health workers in conflict zones.

The AU leader said that the health crisis in Africa is not a matter of lack of capacity or knowledge, but of exclusion from funding, decision-making, technology and global solidarity.

The Angolan Head of State who landed in Geneva on Monday (19), was among the world leaders who addressed the high-level session of the event, where he spoke in his capacity as the African Union Chair.
