Africa-Press – Angola. A total of 7,684 areas have been cleared of mines in Angola so far, the director general of the National Mine Action Agency (ANAM), Brigadier Leonardo Severino Sapalo, said Wednesday.
Speaking to the press after the opening session of the Technical Workshop on the National Mine Action Strategy, Sapalo said there were currently 956 areas cleared, which he considered to be good progress.
He guaranteed that they are committed to doing everything they can to reach the recommended targets as quickly as possible and return the land that is still affected by explosive devices.
“We are in a joint effort with the International Demining Center, based in Geneva, which provides assistance to all countries and Angola has also received this support to draw up the new strategy for completing the demining of identified mines,” he said.
Asked about the areas that still have mines, he said that according to the recent Political Administrative Division (DPA), Moxico appears as the most mined region (208 areas), Bié (144), Cuango (107), Cubango (92) and the remaining provinces have figures below those mentioned.
He recalled that the process of demining the national territory actually began with the signing of the Bicesse Accords in 1991, noting that there have been breaks, but that even so the efforts of the government and international organizations have not stopped.
During the three days of training, the participants will address various issues related to the demining process in the country.
