Africa-Press – Angola. Brazilian President and Chairperson of the BRICS, Lula da Silva, on Saturday proposed a profound reform of the global governance structure, underlining the urgency of democratizing the UN Security Council.,
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the BRICS 17th Summit, the Brazilian statesman considered the current configuration of the United Nations “outdated with the multipolar reality of the 21st century”.
He warned that the existing scenario contributes to the increase in instability and tensions at a global level.
“Every day we spend with an archaic and exclusive international structure is a day lost to solve the serious crises that plague humanity,” said Lula da Silva, in a speech marked by strong criticism of the current international system and calls for a new fair and representative multipolar order.
Meanwhile, President Lula highlighted the historic role of the United Nations in the defeat of fascism and in the process of decolonization, but warned of the current weakening of multilateralism, resulting from the instrumentalization of international organizations and the prevalence of unilateral interests in global decisions.
Referring to the situation in the Middle East, Lula strongly condemned both the terrorist attacks by Hamas and Israel indiscriminate military actions in Gaza, stressing that the use of hunger as a weapon of war is unacceptable.
For the statesman, the only path to lasting peace in the region is through the end of the Israeli occupation and the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state, based on the 1967 borders.
With regard to the war in Ukraine, the Brazilian head of state reiterated support for the territorial integrity of all states and defended direct dialogue between the parties involved, highlighting the initiative of the “Group of Friends for Peace” – led by Brazil and China – as an alternative way to achieve a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution.
During his speech, Lula lamented the selectivity of the international community in dealing with conflicts, pointing to the situation in Haiti as an example of the early abandonment of a country still in crisis.
The Brazilian leader defended, therefore, the expansion of the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Haiti, with a focus on strengthening security and sustainable development.
“The resources to implement the 2030 Agenda exist, but they are not available due to a lack of political will. It is always easier to invest in war than in peace,” the President noted, pointing out the disparity between investments in arms and the amounts allocated to official development assistance.
In closing his speech, Lula da Silva stressed that the BRICS, due to their diversity, representativeness and capacity for articulation, should position themselves as a proactive force in promoting peace, preventing conflicts and building a new, fairer and more equitable international order.
