President of Zambia defends greater SADC unity

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, defended, this Saturday, in Lusaka, more unity within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), taking into account the principles and objectives that guide the regional organization.

According to the statesman, who was speaking at the extraordinary summit of the double Troika of this African institution, Member States need to work as a single team in support of SADC and with other development communities existing in different parts of the world.

He spoke of the commitment of the missions in eastern DRC and northern Mozambique, emphasizing the need to mobilize means and resources with international cooperation partners, the UN and the African Union (AU).

He highlighted that the organization’s challenges are interconnected and interdependent, regardless of their causes, as they affect everyone and require a common response.

“We will continue to unite our efforts, towards achieving and preserving peace and stability, guided by important instruments or tools, including the Mutual Defense Pact and the Protocol for Cooperation in the Areas of Politics, Defense and Security”, highlighted the also president of this body, in charge of respective cooperation.

According to the president, who guided the summit’s work, the vision is of a region that will provide a safe environment, which is extremely important for socio-economic development, as without peace it is impossible to have development.

The high-level meeting in Lusaka was attended by the Angolan Head of State, as acting president of SADC, who left the Zambian capital to return to Luanda.

The members of the Troika duo and representatives of troop-contributing countries in SADC missions addressed the security situation in the region, with emphasis on the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the province of Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique.
