Africa-Press – Angola. An aquaculture project, with capacity to produce 400 tons of catfish and tilapia fish/year, has been implemented for more than five years on the Quinta do Bagre farm, in Caxito, municipality of Dande, province of Bengo.

The project has a current production of 100 tons and intends, in the near future, to reach around 700 tons.

To this end, it intends to add the fish processing area to the value chain to achieve greater sustainability, according to the company’s managing partner, Mário Mendes.

The project occupies an area of four hectares, has 10 excavation tanks of 5/10 meters in length each, two vessels with a water recirculation system for raising tilapia (cacusso) and catfish.

The initiative has a complete cycle that goes from egg fertilization, incubation, growth to harvest.

It is a private project that has already invested 300 thousand dollars and created 20 jobs.

“We continue to work with our own funds as we have not yet been able to access any financing”, he highlighted.

As for feed, he said there is a certain shortage in the market, which is why he transforms vegetable protein into animal protein.

In relation to marketing, the main destinations are the large supermarkets in Luanda, part of the informal market, including some buyers who go to the farm.

A kilo of tilapia and catfish is currently above 2,500 kwanzas (wholesale purchase) and 3,000 (retail purchase).
