Africa-Press – Angola. The heavy rains that fall in the city of Luena, province of Moxico, made the city and peripheral neighborhoods impassable, causing constraints in the mobility of the population.

Since last Monday, the city of Luena has had almost uninterrupted rain, causing new erosions to reappear, especially in the Bomba neighbourhood, south of Luena.

The population of the Social da Juventude, Vila Luso, 4 de Abril, 4 de Fevereiro and downtown Luena neighborhoods is experiencing the most difficulty in mobility in view of the floods caused by the rains, accompanied by strong winds.

The rain also flooded the access roads to the Nutrition Centre, Hospital Municipal do Moxico, Casa da Cultura, making them completely inaccessible.

The ravine in the Bomba neighborhood, located in the old orchard of Luena, is threatening to destroy the new asphaltic carpet in the Santa-Rosa neighborhood.

In a round made yesterday by press, due to the heavy rains that have been felt since Monday (26), the infiltration of water with a tendency to destroy the asphalting works on the roads in the peripheral neighborhoods was notorious.

People fear the worst

Due to the heavy rains that are felt at short intervals of time, the population that lives around the ravine in the Santa Rosa neighborhood is worried and desperate.

Gilberto Tchinhama is concerned about the imminent rupture of the sandbag barrier set up to stop the flow of rainwater, which could lead to the destruction of houses, including his own.

He appealed to the government to hire a company of recognized reputation and another inspection with a view to stemming the ravine with structuring work.

Resident Osvaldo Ngonga spoke in the last 24 hours of “a lot of panic and terror”, all because the rains do not stop and accelerated the progression of the ravines towards the houses.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, it was like a horror movie, to prevent the worst from happening, the government should hire more serious companies and carry out sustainable work”, said the 24-year-old resident, who has lived in Santa Rosa for six years.

The spokesman for the Civil Protection and Fire Services (SPCB) in Moxico, Domingos Alves Cajimoto, said that a technical team for reducing the risk of disasters is carrying out an in-depth survey to present real results of the damage caused by the rains.
