Reactions against disorder in demonstrations are the highlight of the week

Africa-Press – Angola. The condemnation of the acts of disorder registered in the demonstrations, last Saturday, in Luanda, Benguela and Huambo, as well as that of the Angolan Isabel dos Santos, by the Court of Appeal of Amsterdam, Holland, are highlights of the political week.

As for the demonstrations, the MPLA defended in Parliament that they be peaceful, orderly, under the terms of the Law and the Constitution.

UNITA underlined the need

to reflect on the causes that moved the demonstrations and reaffirmed its commitment to peace and democracy.

During the week, the Court of Appeal of Amsterdam, Netherlands, condemned businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, for embezzling 52.6 million euros from Sonangol.

Isabel dos Santos, however, promised to appeal this decision.

In the national political news released in the last seven days, the visit of two of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to Uíge province was also highlighted.

In the provincial capital, the Head of Executive Power oriented the 1st Meeting of the Local Governance Council and visited the agro-livestock fair, having rejoiced with the agricultural potential of that province.

At the Local Governance Council, among other actions, the Executive assessed the Emergency Program for Containment of Ravines and Construction and Rehabilitation of National Roads.

Angola has identified 742 ravines, 112 in an emergency situation, 214 in critical condition and 416 in the formation phase.

In the legislative field, the deputies of the National Assembly approved, in general, the Proposal for a Law approving the Statute of Former Presidents of the Republic.

The document, which has 14 articles and five chapters, had 175 votes in favor, none against and no abstentions.

Parliamentarians also unanimously approved, during the final global vote, the Proposal for a Law approving the Labor Procedure Code.

With regard to the 44th anniversary of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), marked Thursday (22), the holder of the portfolio, Eugénio Laborinho, appealed to citizens to refrain from affronting the defense and security forces, under penalty of being held accountable criminally.

The minister discouraged hate speech, the vulgarization of the image and good name of public entities and natural persons, via social networks and some media.

In the week that ends saturday,

Sebastião Gunza assumed the presidency of the Constitutional Court and promised to work to speed up the ongoing processes in the institution, as well as improve the procedures in that higher court.

In Luanda, the JFNLA (youth branch of the FNLA) announced that the 2nd Ordinary Congress of the organization will take place on the 9th, 10th and 11th of August.

Also among the headlines of the week was Angola’s participation in the 3rd United Nations High Level Conference on Combating Terrorism, which took place in New York, United States of America.

The conference was the starting point for the preparation of the New Agenda for Peace, proposed by the UN Secretary-General in his report on the Common Agenda, and for the African Summit on the Fight against Terrorism, scheduled for 2024, in Nigeria.
