Angola’s commitment to actions to promote international peace and security, with emphasis on leadership in the Great Lakes Region, was recognized, Thursday (12), in Luanda, by the president of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, as a fundamental contribution to fulfilling the multilateralism agenda and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Abdulla Shahid, who commented on the performance of the Angolan State at the end of the meeting with the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, at the Presidential Palace in Cidade Alta, told the press that he was satisfied with the Government’s political initiatives, as they proved to be effective. in the prevention and removal of threats to the peace.

“Angola is a very important country for the United Nations, because it is committed to multilateralism. It is also one of those countries that support and fight for the application and respect of the principles of the UN Charter”, declared the holder of the General Assembly of the UN.

In the context of the global challenges, Abdulla Shahid mentioned, by the way, that the “tremendous challenges” of the world in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, show that there is a need to observe multilateralism, in order to minimize the “added problems” faced by countries, regardless of whether they are developed, less developed or in the process of developing.

“All these challenges can only be resolved through multilateralism”, he underlined, having defended more funding to guarantee food and energy security, as well as the sustainable development of the different States. In this regard, he stressed that the measures taken by the Angolan Government against desertification and climate change, pointing out, as an example, the Cafu channel (Water Transfer System of the Cunene River), designed to combat severe drought and benefit a total of 230,000 inhabitants and 255,000 head of cattle in the southern region of the country .

The president of the UN General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, visits the Cafu canal today to see the importance of the water transfer system, from the Cunene River, in the lives of the families that inhabit the localities of Ombala-Yo. -Mungo (municipality of Ombadja), Namacunde and Ndombondola.

Since arriving in the country, on Wednesday, the UN official said that he had already reviewed issues related to cooperation between Angola and the United Nations, during the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.

With the resident coordinator of the United Nations System in the country, the president of its General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, oriented it to continue working with the Government, in order to increasingly raise the well-being of the populations.

The president of the UN General Assembly has been visiting the country since Wednesday, after visiting the city of Abdjan, Côte d’Ivoire, as part of his tour of some countries on the African continent.

President João Lourenço Addressed Cooperation
The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, addressed, this Thursday (12), the state of relations between Angola and France, in a telephone conversation with his counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

In the contact, which took place in the middle of the afternoon, the two Heads of State also addressed regional and global issues, mainly those related to food security. Specifically, the FARM-Food and Agriculture Resilience Mission initiative was addressed, a program whose main objective is to prevent and overcome catastrophic effects on food security resulting from the current global situation.

Presidents João Lourenço and Emmanuel Macron also spoke about the financial agreements signed yesterday by the two countries in the global amount of 200 million euros, to finance projects in the area of ​​Agriculture.
