Africa-Press – Angola. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to the African Union (AU), the Gabonese Parfait Onanga-Anyanga,Tuesday, congratulated Angola on the recent election as a member of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the continental organization.

During a meeting with the Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Miguel Bembe, he welcomed the engagement of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in issues leading to the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Africa.

Parfait Onanga-Anyanga informed his interlocutor that the office he heads in Addis Ababa facilitates monthly meetings between representatives of the countries that hold the rotating presidency of the AU PSC and the United Nations Security Council, respectively.

These meetings serve to exchange views on African issues, with a view to coordinating efforts to obtain peaceful solutions to conflicts and the progressive establishment of bases for the continent’s development.

In this sense, he announced the preparation of a meeting between representatives of the Republic of Angola and the Russian Federation, countries that should assume the presidency of each of the decision-making bodies of the respective organizations, in the month of July of the current year.

For his part, Ambassador Miguel Bembe thanked the UN Office for its assistance to the AU and highlighted the diplomatic efforts that Angola has promoted through meetings of Heads of State and Government of the Great Lakes Region, to find ways to resolve the conflict. between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighboring Rwanda.

“It is within this framework that the Summit on the Political Situation and Security in the Eastern Region of the DRC falls, held on 16 February 2024, in Addis Ababa, on the sidelines of the 37th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the AU , of the two meetings held in Luanda, separately, between President João Lourenço, as mediator, and Presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame, in February and March, respectively”, explained the Angolan diplomat.

He added that the visit to Luanda by the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, as acting president of the East African Community (EAC), last March, with the aim of addressing the his Angolan counterpart the peace process in the Eastern Region of the DRC, in harmony with the Luanda and Nairobi processes, as well as the solution to reach a ceasefire and a peace agreement for the civil war in Sudan.

Finally, he highlighted the understanding reached between presidents João Lourenço, Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame for the holding, soon, of a Tripartite Summit, under the auspices of the Republic of Angola.
