Residents want more buses on the Barra do Cuanza/ Benfica route

Africa-Press – Angola. Users of public buses in the commune of Barra do Cuanza, about 100 kilometers south of the center of Luanda, are asking the provincial government to direct the public/private collective transport sector to increase frequencies in route to Benfica (Talatona), within the framework of better mobility for residents.

In the morning and at dusk, the crowd of people at the stops is “almost frightening”, for those who must fulfill their work obligations and return home, a citizen who requested anonymity told.

Some residents said that only a single public transport operator, Tcul, runs between Benfica/Ramiros/Barra do Cuanza in the morning and afternoon, without the capacity to meet the demand, especially for students who use that route.

Manecas de Sousa, a management student, expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that he had to go through many difficulties to go to school, despite waking up early every day.

“If the commune had a high school, students would not experience so many mobility difficulties”, said the student, defending more frequencies of public buses.

Another student, Marcela Fernandes, echoed the concern of her schoolmate, adding that public transport makes it easier in terms of finances, since the round trip from Barra do Cuanza/ Ramiros (vice versa) is paid, in private cars, up to 1,500 kwanzas each passenger, while public buses only pay 100 kwanzas.

For civil servant Miguel Neto, the situation is embarrassing for users of these means, and suggests increasing two frequencies (two in the morning and the same number in the afternoon), which would allow the availability of two options in both periods, thus reducing the overcrowding of buses and crowding at collection points.

Contacted by press, the administrator of Barra do Cuanza, Delicio Ramos, said that it is a concern of the local authorities, who have already requested from the sector in the Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL), the increase to at least two or more frequencies to Benfica .

According to the person in charge, the situation is quite embarrassing, the solution of which involves increasing the frequency of public buses.

The commune of Barra do Cuanza, with an estimated population of 30 thousand inhabitants, has 17 neighborhoods and an extension of 580 square kilometers.

The province of Luanda has about 450 buses in circulation, for an estimated population of nine million and 79 thousand inhabitants, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
