Africa-Press – Angola. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) condemned, this Wednesday, in Luanda, all acts of violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and called on the parties involved to exercise restraint.

A statement, signed by João Lourenço, acting president of the organization and of the Republic of Angola, states that the escalation of hostilities will have a negative impact and will nullify the efforts of the international community in the search for sustainable peace and security in the Middle East.

It also expresses deep concern about the loss of hundreds of innocent civilian lives on both sides and the destruction of property.

“The negative effects of this conflict will undoubtedly lead to an increase in the number of internally displaced people, particularly vulnerable groups of women, children and the elderly”, the document reads.

SADC calls on the international community to support the parties with necessary humanitarian assistance, especially for victims and internally displaced people sheltering in refugee or displacement centers.

It also calls on all relevant stakeholders and the international community to engage in dialogue with the parties involved in the conflict in order to resort to negotiation in the search for a peaceful resolution of the conflict, in accordance with previously adopted UN resolutions, recognizing the existence of two states.

Last Saturday, the military wing of Hamas attacked southern Israel by land, air and sea, causing more than a thousand deaths, most of them civilians.
