Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the Defense Policy and Security Cooperation Organ of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Hage Gottfried Geingob, welcomed the progress made to silence the weapons in the region.
The President of Namibia also stated that the advances achieved, as part of Agenda 2063 “The Africa we want” require a greater commitment from this SADC body, in the promotion and reinforcement of peace and security in the region.
The Statesman was speaking at the troika summit meeting, with the participation of counterparts from South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, to assess issues of peace and security in the southern region of the African continent.
The meeting precedes the 43rd summit of SADC Heads of State and Government, to be held on Thursday, in the Angolan capital (Luanda).
Hage Geingo spoke of the organization’s performance in deliberating and taking decisions on the prevailing security situation in the Democratic Republics of Congo and Mozambique, affected by insecurity due to the presence of armed groups and terrorists.
The Namibian statesman valued the holding of the summit between four economic blocs on the continent, held in Luanda, on June 27, 2023, in partnership with the African Union, which aimed at harmonizing and coordinating interventions for peace in the East of the DRC.
He declared that “without peace, there is no development and without development, there is no peace”.
Therefore, he urged the need for unity, with the firm conviction that security and peace are necessary preconditions and essential facilitators of regional integration and development.
During the Troika summit meeting, held behind closed doors, the Presidents of the Republics of Mozambique, Filipe Nhiussi, and Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshikedi, provided information on the situation in their respective countries.
On the occasion, the executive secretary of SADC, Elias Magosi, considered the stable and peaceful climate in the region in general to be encouraging.
He referred that security challenges still persist in the eastern part of the DRC, which require continuous monitoring and interventions by the region.
Regarding Mozambique, Elias Magosi reported that the situation has improved significantly, with the restoration of areas previously occupied by terrorists and the safe return of displaced people to their places of origin.
He guaranteed that the region will remain in Mozambique to ensure the sustainability of the gains obtained, as well as to support the Government to assume an increasing role in the ownership and full management of the process.
