Africa-Press – Angola. The Southern African Trade Unions Coordination Council (SATUCC) urged Member States of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to increase budgetary allocations, for a “more efficient” fight against child labor.

Speaking at the meeting of SADC Employment and Labor Ministers and Social Partners, SATUCC vice-president, Joy Beene, defended the “urgency” for Member States to develop and implement national actions to eliminate child labor.

He recognized that, despite some countries implementing actions to combat child labor, there is still “a lot” to be done, for the actions to be complete.

He highlighted that SATUCC remains committed to governments to eliminate child labor and ensure that all children have access to education and decent work afterwards.

Unemployment and underemployment, he said, continue to constitute a “major” challenge for Member States, requiring a determined formulation and implementation of national employment policies and other conducive strategic measures.

“It is important that Member States reinforce information about the labor market in training systems and use defined statistical standards and surveys to improve harmonization and comparability at regional level.

The trade unionist also urged SADC to intensify efforts to ensure that workers’ rights and well-being are fully protected and promoted.

For the president of the SADC Private Sector Forum (SPSF), Nester Mukwehwa, the region is faced with several challenges, from high levels of unemployment and the informal economy, the latter of which leaves the community facing challenges in terms of low wages, insecurity, lack of social protection.

The Meeting of Employment and Labor Ministers of the Southern African Development Community and Social Partners began on Sunday, 24th, with the technical meeting of experts, which lasted three days.

The delegations visited the Center for Entrepreneurship and Employment Services (CLESE) in Lubango, to exchange experiences of good practices in the sector, and some tourist attractions in the municipality.
