Africa-Press – Angola. The youth swimmer from Clube Náutico da Ilha de Luanda, Santiago Guimarães, is the highlight of the call-up to the Junior National Team for the World Championship in this category, to be held from the 19th to the 24th of this month, in Otopeni, Romania.

Aged 14, the most valuable athlete (MVP) of the international tournament “50 years of Independence”, with six gold medals in individual competitions, marks his debut at world level as the leader of his class, with 594 points from the International Swimming Federation (FINA).

Santiago also led the list of national records in the Dipanda event, in Luanda, breaking times in the 50m butterfly (27.32), 200m freestyle (2:05.38) and 400m freestyle (4:27.37).

According to a note from the Angolan Swimming Federation (FAN), this Thursday, Rafael Bredel, with 564 points, José Cochofel, with 600 points, and David Padre, with 609 points, are also included in the call-up.

In the women’s category, the country will be represented by Nyriam Morais (573 points), Rhanya Santo (548 points), Jasmine Lourenço (521 points) and Stephanie Jurado (515 points).

The 2023 edition was held in Netanya, Israel. Angola has never won a medal in the world championships in this category.
