Africa-Press – Angola. The entry into operation of the Saurimo Photovoltaic Plant, inaugurated this Tuesday, in the province of Lunda-Sul, will save almost three billion kwanzas in fossil fuels.

The fact was announced by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, during the inauguration of this project, having mentioned that Lunda-Sul recorded, in 2023, a total cost of six billion kwanzas in fuel, which will be reduced to around 50 percent, the result of this solar park, which will produce cheaper energy and reach more people.

According to the minister, the province consumed around 43 million liters of fuel, an amount that is expected to reduce to 19 million this year, with the emergence of this plant, and during the day, energy from solar panels will be consumed, while At night, thermal power plants come into operation.

João Baptista Borges highlighted that infrastructure constitutes a cost-reduction solution in the production of clean and cheap energy, increasing the availability of this asset.

He considered the project as a historic milestone in the country’s path towards new renewable energies, taking into account that the country is following a path within the energy transition.

He said that this is the third solar park to be inaugurated, among seven under construction in the country, aiming to serve a universe of more than one million people.

He made it known that in addition to the Solar Program I, the Government also has Program II, which will cover the eastern provinces of the country, with 60 locations, including the provinces of Bié and Malanje, with around 200 megawatts of capacity, expected to cover around 900 thousand consumers, with 250 thousand home calls.

The minister guaranteed that the southern region of the country will have another program for the provinces of Cunene, Huíla, Namibe and Cuando Cubango, with 900 thousand household connections, which will total around one million and 200 thousand connections (two East and South projects ).

He assured that the responsible ministry will make one million and 250 thousand new connections, by 2027, to move from the current access rate of 43 percent to 50 percent of the country’s population.

On the other hand, he highlighted that the electrification project underway in the country will also include water supply projects, as they are two essential goods for the population.

He mentioned that the program for the South of Angola already includes the construction of 240 water points, so that each locality has electricity and water, while the East will be incorporated into a set of around 50 liquid supply projects for municipal headquarters. and communal.

To protect these infrastructures, the governor appealed to citizens to practice good conduct and monitor acts of vandalization of public property, which will also serve future generations.
