Second day of the Gavi conference marked by the distinction of João Lourenço

Africa-Press – Angola. The conference on the global impact of vaccines, taking place since Tuesday in the Spanish capital, reserved, this Wednesday night, a moment of recognition of the action of the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço .

In a ceremony that was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, José Manuel Albares, and the Minister of Health of Angola, Sílvia Lutucuta, in addition to figures from GAVI, including researchers and promoters of the vaccination chain around the world, João Lourenço received a book entitled “The Art of saving life” in recognition of his efforts in combating the Covid-19 pandemic.

Regarding the distinction, João Lourenço made it known that the Angolan Government invests around US$25 million annually in the purchase of vaccines, as part of the routine vaccination programme.

In his speech, the Angolan Head of State also stated that since 2017 the Executive has assumed responsibility for maintaining the routine vaccination program independently.

Meanwhile, the second day of work was also marked by the panel’s approach to the role of public and private partners in the immunization agenda, as well as the pneumonia crisis that affects Mozambique.

On the Angolan side, the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, addressed the theme “one billion children vaccinated globally”, presenting the strategy to vaccinate all children.

In parallel with these two events, Gavi promoted, throughout the day, other interaction forums with representatives of various multilateral organizations, governments, civil society, companies and universities.

At the center of the debates is the question of the future of world immunization, in particular the new sources of financing for vaccines, either by Spain or by Gavi (Global Alliance for Vaccines), the two co-organizers of the Madrid Conference.

The High Level Summit on the Impact of Vaccination will take place from the 13th to the 15th in Madrid, capital of Spain.
