Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, called this Saturday in Juba, capital of South Sudan, for regional cooperation between the countries of the Great Lakes region, for sustainable peace and stability.

Speaking to the press, on the sidelines of her participation in the 13th Ordinary Session of the Plenary of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, Carolina Cerqueira said that Angola intends to accelerate the peace process and regional cooperation.

According to the AN leader, expanding opportunities for peace in the region would bring complete stability to the Great Lakes region, helping nations such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), two countries in the bloc that are still struggling with major challenges. of insecurity.

With regard to cooperation between Angola and South Sudan, Carolina Cerqueira stated that the country is open for this purpose in the most varied areas of mutual interest.

“If there is something that South Sudan will have to learn from Angola, it is that people must be united and trust each other to interpret or translate the intention and will of the population to have and live in a peaceful and peaceful environment”, he said.

He underlined that for South Sudan to move forward, it must embrace the spirit of reconciliation and forget the past.

“South Sudan must be aware that without reconciliation, peaceful processes are very difficult to achieve in any society that has been disturbed by war,” he added.

For Carolina Cerqueira, parliament, the media, academia, families and communities, as well as professional unions representing women, youth and other groups play key roles in the peace process, especially in peace education.

“At the parliamentary level we will continue to hold political consultations. We are going to create a friendship group between South Sudan and Angola so that we can motivate and promote public policies for democracy and peace in the region”, she stressed.

To this end, he said, the two houses will have to create opportunities for women and young people to participate in the legislative process, urging women to be promoters of peace, educators and participants in the reconstruction of the country, assuming decision-making roles.

In his view, only democracy can provide periodic and fair elections that constitute the critical elements for peace in any country.

He also defended the creation of jobs for young people, the empowerment of women and the improvement of the living conditions of the population through the fight against poverty and corruption.

The Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region is an inter-parliamentary organization that brings together national parliamentarians from the 12 member states of the IRGL, namely Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic (CAR), Congo, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.
