Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, received, this Wednesday, in Madrid, Spain, a book entitled “The Art of Saving Life”, in recognition of his efforts in combating the Covid-19 pandemic. 19.

The work, attributed by Gavi-Global Alliance for Vaccines, is an art collection dedicated to the theme of saving lives, and was limited edition.

According to Gavi, this recognition also included the commitment of the Angolan Head of State in matters of contingency to immunize the populations.

Speaking at the event, João Lourenço thanked partners for their support, including the Covax Initiative, Gavi, WHO and UNICEF, as well as the Spanish government, for the success of the vaccination program against Covid-19.

According to the Angolan President, partnerships with Gavi, WHO and UNICEF are extremely important for health in Angola, Africa and the world.

In turn, the president of Gavi, Durão Barroso, highlighted the ongoing reforms in Angola and the way in which the country fought the Covid-19 pandemic.

The distinction ceremony was presided over by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, on the sidelines of the first Gavi Global Vaccine Impact Conference, which brings together, until the 15th of this month, several world statesmen.

It should be remembered that President João Lourenço has dedicated, since 2018, special attention to public health, mainly to face the global health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which infected thousands of Angolans.

To control the spread of the virus and avoid the collapse of the National Public Health System, the Angolan Executive made a strong investment in the construction of hospitals and diagnostic centers, and in the acquisition of vaccines.

As part of the vaccination campaign, the Angolan authorities mobilized 35.5 million doses of safe vaccines for an eligible population of around 18 million inhabitants, aged 12 and over.

Still according to official figures, since the beginning of the vaccination process against Covid-19, 18 million, 932 thousand and 660 people have been immunized, of which 15 million, 884 thousand with only one dose, 8 million 927 with the dose complete, 2 million, 190 thousand and 106 with the booster doses and 6 million 087 citizens without the booster dose.

According to information from the Government, from March 2020 to 2022, the country carried out close to 40 flights to Beijing, China, in order to bring biosafety material and medical equipment necessary to face the pandemic.

Despite the resources made available by the Executive to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, Angola benefited from international donors, including countries and organizations.

In another area, to increase hospital care, the State built, by 2022, 172 health units, which increased the number of beds by 8,492 units.

Government data indicate that, by 2022, the country had more than 33,000 hospital beds, as a result of the State’s investment in improving health services.
