Africa-Press – Angola. Built for 600 inmates, the prison in Sumbe, capital of Cuanza Sul, is currently overcrowded, currently housing 1,177 prisoners, of which 657 are convicted.
This was one of the main problems found by the deputies of the Círculo Provincial do Cuanza Sul, who visited the prison this Monday.
On the occasion, the deputies requested the urgent rehabilitation of the comarca, in order to guarantee better comfort to the inmates and other valences to boost the re-education of the prisoners.
Speaking to the press, the coordinator of the nucleus of deputies residing in Cuanza Sul, Agostinho Domingos Cassessa, said that the infrastructure of the prison unit was in a state of disrepair, in need of urgent rehabilitation.
“We are concerned, which is why we will take these and other concerns to the provincial government and the Ministry of the Interior, in order to find a solution, because due to lack of conditions, one of the blocks of the penitentiary unit was closed, forcing some inmates to sleep in tents due to lack of space”, he pointed out.
On the other hand, the deputy welcomed the implementation of the training program for prisoners, stressing that it will allow them to be inserted into productive activities after serving their sentence.
In turn, the director of the Sumbe Penitentiary, Daniel José, said that the institution is facing serious problems, including the lack of transport for the transfer of prisoners, as well as agricultural inputs and tractors for the reactivation of agricultural activity. .
The deputies of the Círculo Provincial do Cuanza Sul also visited the Provincial Command of the National Police, where they learned about the public security situation in the region.
