Supreme Court Reaches Query Stage in "Kopelipa Case"

Africa-Press – Angola. The Supreme Court on Monday reached the Query Stage in the trial of Generals Manuel Hélder Vieira Dias Júnior “Kopelipa” and Leopoldino.

Fragoso do Nascimento “Dino,” at this point entering final phase and precedes the reading of the decision (Sentence), scheduled for the 27th of this month.

The Query consists of presenting the fundamental questions formulated by the court during the presentation of evidence, which must be answered by the judges as proven or not proven.

Press has learnt that due to the complexity of the case, the number of questions may exceed 100, which will be analyzed by the judges of the First Section of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, responsible for assessing the factuality of the crimes presented in the accusation by the the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

During the oral arguments, the Prosecution dropped most of the charges against General “Kopelipa,” but maintained its request for his conviction for influence peddling.

Regarding General “Dino,” and the companies China International Fund (CIF), Plansmart International Limited, and Utter Right International Limited, as well as defendants Fernando Gomes dos Santos and Yiu Haiming, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requested convictions for document forgery, influence peddling, and money laundering.

The defendants are facing charges of embezzlement, fraud, document forgery, criminal conspiracy, abuse of power, money laundering, and influence peddling.

With the hearing of the Query complete, only the court’s final decision will remain, which will be announced next Monday, October 27th, when the Supreme Court is expected to issue its judgment.
